This article provides a brief overview of the renewable energy sector in India. The importance of harnessing renewable energy has been widely acknowledged, for both meeting the ever increasing energy requirements as well as addressing the negative externalities associated with the conventional sources of energy. Recognising this, differential targets have been set for harnessing renewable energy, by both the National Action Plan on Climate Change as well as by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. However, the sector continues to face several concerns that hinder the development of renewable energy in India. The Government of India has made a number of commitments for the development of the sector for which budgetary outlays have also been earmarked. However, renewable energy largely continues to be seen as complementary to the current conventional power generation and would require greater efforts for it to meet its potential.
