Health Sector in India - Need for Further Strengthening
The First Five Year Plan of India accorded high importance to healthcare, especially primary healthcare, by regarding health to be fundamental to national progress in the form of a resource for economic development. At the global level, the Alma Ata declaration of WHO in 1978 called on all govern¬ments to “formulate national policies, strategies and plans of action to launch and sustain primary health care as part of a comprehensive national health system and in coordination with other sectors”.
